MTGO Draft: EMN-SOI #10

I'm back for more! Here's the tenth draft of the blog. I played this draft the day after my 3 draft marathon. I definitely have a problem controlling myself...

  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Why hello there money rare! Always nice to start off with a card that pays for a big portion of the draft. There's not much else in the pack anyway as the next card I would consider is the Courageous Outrider. I don't think Ishkanah is a bomb in limited but it's solid, especially if I can hit Delirium consistently and run black as a second colour. Let's see where the draft takes us.

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Primal Druid can slow down early offensives and help me accelerate to my more expensive spells.

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Maybe I take Grapple to stay on colour? Galvanic Bombardment is good cheap removal though and I think it's worth taking here. I could always splash it since I'm in green and already ave Primal Druid for mana fixing.

  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

I take this card with the first pick many times before so getting it fourth is okay by me.

  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

I branched out to white because I think the Priest is one of the better cards in the pack. I could have taken Identity Thief which I like as well, or stay the course and take the Bloodbriar. It would go well with the Primal Druid if I can grab some Emerge creatures. Instead, I hedged my bets in case white is open and we'll see if it pays off.

  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

There isn't much else here so I'll grab the second Druid.

  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Looks like white is available.

  Pack 1 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Yup. I'm happy I caught the signal early this time. Hopefully the white keeps flowing.

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Raredraft! I actually had an opponent live the dream and have the Battlements and Garrison in the deck.

  Pack 1 pick 10:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 11:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 12:

  My Pick:

Nice pick up this late in the pack.

  Pack 1 pick 13:

  My Pick:

I got the Bloodbriar anyway. Maybe I'm in the right colour combination for once.

  Pack 1 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

I probably should have taken the Borrowed Grace here. There's not much else and I guess I got greedy and took the rare.

  Pack 2 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Combos well with Bloodbriar and negates any aura like Choking Restraints my opponents may be playing.

  Pack 2 pick 3:

  My Pick:

I really want the It of the Horrid Storm but Ulvenwald Captive is a very strong card.

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

WG is a combination that's usually short on removal so having this in my pile is important.

  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Having a pair is even better.

  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

I've had Mantle's just wreck me in some games so I wanted to try it for myself. I probably should have taken the Gryff though.

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Tangleclaw is solid and I should be able to cast double green without any issues.

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

A good combat trick albeit a little expensive but an easy pick as there is nothing else in the pack.

  Pack 2 pick 9:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 10:

  My Pick:

I think I took this to help Ishkanah hit Delirium but Spectral Reserves should have been the pick.

  Pack 2 pick 11:

  My Pick:

Maybe I should have grabbed the spider and put in a swamp just for Ishkanah? I think I canp ull it off with double Primal Druid but is it worth it?

  Pack 2 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Easy pick here as Angelic Purge is solid removal and usually helps with Delirium as I sacrifice a land most of the time.

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

I'm hoping the Aim High comes back around.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Expose Evil is not something to be excited about at pick 3. Maybe I should have taken the Provisioner? I don't think I have enough humans in the deck for it to pump consistently but it's a Hill Giant with Trample at worst.

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Well I get my chance here as these last few packs have not been that kind to me.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

  My Pick:

I think I'm going to have issues hitting Delirium so maybe I should have gone with the Scarecrow?

  Pack 3 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Most of the time I play the Hermit it does absolutely nothing because opponents will play around it. However every once in a while the Hermit will throw cards at you.

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  My Pick:

This card is way better than 7th pick. I'm willing to give it a good home. I'm passing up on another spider though but I think I'll survive.

  Pack 3 pick 8:

  My Pick:

I think the 2 slot is lacking in this deck so the Logger definitely fills a hole.

  Pack 3 pick 9:

  My Pick:

The Drifter continues to shore up the 2 slot so the deck can curve better. The Spectral Shepherd is essentially a Dawn Gryff in this deck as I don't plan to run any islands.

  Pack 3 pick 10:

  My Pick:

I got my Aim High but now I'm not sure if there's room for it.

  Pack 3 pick 11:

  My Pick:

Might Beyond Reason may be an expensive combat trick but it leaves you with a bigger creature after the fight.

  Pack 3 pick 12:

  My Pick:

I took a foil Mountain here because why not?

  Pack 3 pick 13:

  My Pick:

Nice, I ended up getting the Scarecrow anyway.

  Pack 3 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 15:

  My Pick:

I ended up with lots of playables so i had the difficult decision of cutting to 40 cards:

1 Dauntless Cathar

2 Prey Upon
1 Lunarch Mantle
1 Tangleclaw Werewolf
1 Angelic Purge
1 Backwoods Survivalists
7 Plains
1 Topplegeist
1 Hermit of the Natterknolls

1 Crossroads Consecrator
1 Springsage Ritual
1 Wolfkin Bond
1 Aim High
1 Dawn Gryff
1 Woodcutter's Grit
1 Intrepid Provisioner
1 Primal Druid

Match 1 I'm paired up against BR and my opponent starts off with Ember-Eye Wolf and Brazen Wolves. I stick a Lunarch Mantle on my Hermit and Prey Upon to kill the Brazen Wolves. Olivia's Dragoon replaces the Brazen Wolves and I add Moorland Drifter to my team. Impetuous Devils kills the Drifter and I end up at 9 life while my opponent is sitting at 12. I attack for 4 with the Hermit, play a Priest and Prey Upon the Ember-Eye Wolf. I should have killed the Dragoon as he pitches Avacyn's Judgement to kill the Priest and tie the game at 8 life a piece. He also discards Weirded Vampire for some reason on the same turn without enough mana to cast it. Declining the Madness trigger crashes the replay. I've been stuck on three lands this whole time and the race was very close  before the crash...I somehow managed to win this one.

Game 2 my opponent starts strong with Ghoulcaller's Accomplice and Brazen Wolves to my Primal Druid. The Druid holds off the first attack from the Accomplice but when the Wolves hit the board I decide to sacrifice the Druid to Angelic Purge to kill the Wolves. This accelerates me to Faithbearer Paladin on turn 4. My plans change as he adds Insatiable Gorgers to the board and I'm about to take a lot of damage next turn. I play a Priest and leave mana open for Expose Evil instead. Lucky that I did because my opponent casts Stensia Masquerade which gets out of hand very quickly if I let through some attacks. I play the Paladin on the next turn with mana to tap down the Gorgers. He plays Impetuous Devils and I decide to take hit from the Gorgers to tap down the Devils or I would lose the Paladin. I hit with the Paladin to gain some life back with the totals now at 17-16 in his favour. I add the Hermit to my side leaving mana to tap down the Gorgers and pop the clue I got from Expose Evil. Ishkanah without Delrium hits the board and Prey Upon kills his Bloodmad Vampire as his Accomplice can't hold off the Hermit and Paladin. He puts on another blocker but Lunarch Mantle on the Paladin with plenty of land to sacrifice seals the game for me.

I keep a sketchy hand for the first game of Match 2. with all lands and two 4 drops.  Of course I draw another 4 drop and lands the next few turns. Luckily my opponent hasn't been doing anything and I start off with a Backwoods Survivalist but it gets met with Fiery Temper. Stensia Innkeeper locks one of my lands which is okay as I play Tangleclaw Werewolf but it gets killed my Alchemist's Greeting as the Innkeeper starts to do some damage. It's joined by a second Innkeeper as I get Swift Spinner and Iskanah on the board to try and slow things down. Angelic Purge removes my first pick and I replace it with Bloodbriar and a Mantle on the Spinner. He throws both Innkeepers at me again and I block one for one. Savage Alliance threatens to wreck my board. I sacrifice a few lands with the Mantle to grow the Bloorbriar and it's the only creature to survive the fight. I finally get in an attack on turn 9 and he's now at 16 while I'm at 7 life. Ironclad Slayer and Guardian of Pilgrims replenishes his side of the table and Collective Efforts kills my Bloodbriar and I have to chump block the Slayer with a Primal Druid. Dauntless Cathar joins his side as I flip an Ulvenwald Captive to hold off his team. I play a Paladin and he adds a Stromkirk Occultist. I missed on my last two draws and he swings with everything, playing Spreading Flames to take the game.

Game 2 starts off better with a Captive and Priest. My opponent starts off better as well, putting a Choking Restraints on the Captive and attacking with his Field Creeper. There's an Occultist for him and Shrill Howler for me and Alchemist's Greeting kills the Priest. I get a chance to transform and hit with the Howler so I take it planning to trade the horror token for his Occultist. Ride Down stops that plan and Angelic Purge removes the transformed Howler. I play Expose Evil to buy some time and he plays Courageous Outrider which crashes the replay... I end up losing though as I remember he had removal spells for almost every creature I played.

For the final Match I'm up against WB and he starts off by playing Boon of Emrakul on my Bloodbriar. Gavony Unhallowed faces down my Backwoods Survivalists but somehow the replays starts to glitch out. The replay shows us tapping lands and going through the turns but nothing is being played. Weird. I take the game though and I'm one away from 2 booster packs. Game 2 I start with a Captive and Shrill Howler and my opponent replies with an Accomplice. Puncturing Light kills the Howler and I accelerate out a Paladin. It meets a Choking Restraints though and the Accomplice comes in for 2. I put a Mantle on the Captive to making it a more intimidating blocker. He plays a Priest but I get to Prey Upon it with the retrained Paldin, netting me some life in the process. Topplegeist allows me to peck away at his life as a second Prey Upon kills Thalia and I'm up to 22 life. My opponent is still at 19 though and the game looks to go longer as he adds a Dauntless Cathar and I play Emrakul's Evangel and a Survivalists. Midnight Scavengers brings back the Priest and I finally get to transform the Captive. It flies over and my opponent drops to 10 life before the Priest gets online. Angelic Purge takes care of Markov Dreadknight but the Priest starts to lock down the Abomination so I got back to pecking away with the Topplegeist. He attacks with the Scavengers and Cathar. I block with the Survivalists and sacrifice the Mantle to itself to give the Survivalist Delirium to win the fight against the Scavengers. He plays Borrowed Malevolence to tilt the fight in hit favour and kill the Topplegeist. I pull the trigger on the Evangel in response and sacrifice the Paladin as well as all the doomed creatures. I win on the backswing.

Too bad I lost in Match 2 to the guy with the deck packed full of removal but I got to play a pretty exciting final game because of it. I'm still having issues in terms of evaluating starting hands. I'll have to keep working on it and hopefully become better.
