MTGO Draft: EMN-SOI #6

I'm back for draft #6. Let's see if I can finally get a win!

  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

A lot of strong green cards in this pack. I'll take the Cryptbreaker here though as it can help with mana flood and pull off madness cards. It also starts to generate card advantage quickly if I can get some zombies on the board.

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

I could pick the Constrictor or the Priest but the Devils is pseudo-removal that punches through for some serious damage if there are no blockers.

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

I could take the Weirded Vampire which would go great with the Cryptbreaker but I can probably pick one up later in the draft. Drag Under is probably the strongest card so I'll take in case my other colours don't flow.

  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

I guess I'll just take quality cards in 4 different colours and see where that takes me? Prey Upon is the best card in the pack and the cards in my colours aren't 4th pick material. I'll have to keep waiting for a clear signal.

  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Double Drag Under will definitely pull me towards blue. Hopefully I can get a UB zombie deck going.

  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

I feel like this card costs so much but I'll take it here to cut black. It might not be too bad if I grab some madness cards.

  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Maybe these are just poor quality packs? I'll try this over the Spontaneous Mutation.

  Pack 1 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Hopefully I can get a Midnight Scavengers.

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Foulbloods are pretty tough to deal with if I can hit delirium consistently. Being a zombie helps the Cryptbreaker as well.

  Pack 1 pick 10:

  My Pick:

Now I'm going to grab as many zombies as I can. If not I might not be able to justify running this.

  Pack 1 pick 11:

  My Pick:

Happy to see this wheel.

  Pack 1 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Unsubstantiate is good but Boon is solid removal spell.

  Pack 2 pick 2:

  My Pick:

I'm happy to take a second one here.

  Pack 2 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Midnight Scavengers is great. Even without the Graf Rats.

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Helps with the Cryptbreaker. I think it's better than the Cultist and Scour the Laboratory and the Curious Homunculus in this case.

  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

A decent blocker that can help me get delirium for the Foulbloods and it's a zombie for Cryptbreaker.

  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Maybe I should have taken the Haunter as I don't  see myself playing the Maniac without any Emerge creatures.

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Maybe I could blink the Maniac?

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Helps with Delirium.

  Pack 2 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Should have taken Turn Aside for sideboard.

  Pack 2 pick 10:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 11:

  Pack 2 pick 12:

  Pack 2 pick 14:

  Pack 2 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Haven't played with this card yet so I want to give it a shot. Seems like it'll be good in the long game. Compelling Deterrence or Stitched Mauler would be my next pick.

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Maybe I should have taken Merciless Resolve to help me hit Delirium and draw me some cards.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

  My Pick:

There hasn't been anything great for me in Pack 3 hopefully that changes soon.

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Here's something nice. Works well with the Supplicant too.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

  My Pick:

A decent three drop and better than anything in my colours.

  Pack 3 pick 6:

  My Pick:

I might play this to help with the curve.

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Probably running this.

  Pack 3 pick 9:

  My Pick:

I picked one up anyway.

  Pack 3 pick 10:

  My Pick:

I don't need two. Maybe I should have taken the Wild-Field Scarecrow last pick.

  Pack 3 pick 11:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 12:

For some reason I can't find the final decklist so let's move on to the matches.

Match 1 I'm playing against BG and he starts off with a Captive and Wailing Ghoul. I play a Supplicant with the intention of playing a Weirded Vampire off the ability but a Somberwald Stag puts a stop to my plans. I play Boon of Emrakul on the Stag and he replaces it with Liliana's Elite (now a 3/3) and a Field Creeper while I hardcast the Vampire. Mournwillow comes down and he swings with the team. The Vampire eats the Ghoul but I drop to 14 life. I play a Graf Rats and Curious Homunculus on my turn to replenish my side of the board. I trade the Rats for the Mournwillow and eat the Creeper with the Vampire. His Elite is now a 6/6 and he plays a Midnight Scavengers to get back the Mournwillow, shrinking the Elite so I can double block it with the Vampire and a Furtive Homunculus. It of the Horrid Swarm and Asylum Visitor results in his team growing to 5 creatures and I play an Enlightened Maniac to try and keep up. A Watcher in the Web and the Mournwillow from my opponent ends the game while I end up drawing blanks for the last two turns.

Game 2 starts a little bit better for me as I play a Field Creeper and Skirsdag Supplicant but his Wailing Ghoul is a perfect blocker while my opponent sits on a Sinister Concoction. Hinterland Logger and Explosive Apparatus also show up on his side of the table and I Drag Under the zombie to try and push through some damage. He trades the Logger for the Creeper and replays the Ghoul and we're back in the stalemate. My opponent then plays Boon of Emrakul on my Supplicant and an Asylum Visitor on the same turn. I play Epiphany at the Drownyard at the end of his turn for 5 cards and unfortunately the replay stopped. These matches happened before I realized there was a bug in the replays but in later posts I try to remember that there will be a bug and jot down notes as the match unfolds. I can't remember how the rest of the game played out but I win and we go to Game 3.

I open with Crypbreaker and Graf Rats while my opponent plays a Logger and Oath of Liliana. I sacrifice the Rats and play a Wailing Ghoul instead of a Foulbloods since the Ghoul can block the Logger. Tangleclaw Weerewolf and Woodland Patrol joins his team while my Foulbloods allows me to start drawing cards off the Cryptbreaker as my opponent seems hesitant to attack. We both start to build up our board presence but I'm drawing an extra card each turn. I eventually use the card advantage to grind it out, playing my removal and bounce spells to let my team through.

I'm paired against UR for Match 2. I'm a bit flooded but I start with the Cryptbreaker and start trading my lands for zombies while my opponent starts with a Neonate and Tattered Haunter. I Drag Under the Haunter to set him back a bit but in hindsight I could have just swung in since it couldn't block my ground creatures. I could have used the turn to play Merciless Resolve instead. A Forgemaster holds off my team and the Haunter comes back and a Deranged Whelp joins it. I Drag Under the Forgemaster but don't attack so it didn't really do anything as he replays it and adds a second Haunter on the same turn. I start drawing cards off the Cryptbreaker and Madness out a Weirded Vampire as well. I make a mistake by attacking with a Field Creeper, forgetting the Forgemaster would just eat it because of its ability. I'm on a 3 turn clock as the pair of Haunters knock me down to 12. I Boon of Emrakul the transformed Forgemaster with the intention of attacking with the whole team and try to race but my opponent is at 17 and I can't keep up as he continues to add creatures to the board.

For Game 2 I mulligan to 6 and keep a 1 lander with a Cryptbreaker and a Wailing Ghoul with a Boon. I'm hopoinh the Cryptbreaker will help me out once I get the second land. Maybe I shouldn't have kept since I was on the play but I find an island on the second draw. I'm not too far behind as my opponent only has a Deranged Whelp on the board. Smoldering Werewolf comes down and kills my Cryptbreaker and my chances of winning drop significantly. I Boon the Werewolf and swing in for 3 with the Ghoul and a zombie token as the life totals are 16-15 in my favour. My plans of racing are dashed as a Voltaren Duelist teams up with the Whelp and attack for 5. For some reason the Duelist trigger crashes the replay so I don't know how but I eke out a win here. These replay crashes are very frustrating and in later drafts(i.e. Kaladesh) I actually start to save the chat to help recreate the games.

In the final game my opponent starts with a Furyblade Vampire and a Haunter and when i try to trade my Harvest Hand for the Vampire, Abandon Reason kills the scarecrow while getting in an extra point of damage with the Haunter. I play Murderous Compulsion on the spirit and a Curious Homunculus on the same turn to try and keep pace on board. My oppnent attacks for 1 and ships the turn. I play a Cyrptbreaker and Enlightened Maniac. Forgemaster comes down which I Drag Under and send in my horror. He replies with a Conduit of Storms but the board is looks like it's in my favour. I put the Scythe on the horror and hit for 4 and a Smoldering Werewolf more than evens the board as it takes out the Homunculus and the Cryptbreaker. I Merciless Resolve in response to get some value on the creatures destined for the graveyard. I play Boon on the Werewolf before it can transform and run out a Supplicant. He transforms his conduit to trade for the equipped horror and the life total is now tied at 11. I play a Graf Rats and Weirded Zombie and have 4 creatures to his Vampire and Forgemaster. I Boon the transformed Forgemaster and swing in with the team but Spreading Flames takes out 3 creatures. Ouch. I follow up with a Stallion of Ashmouth. He finally uses the Vampires ability and Madness out a Distemper of the Blood, attacking for 6 while I'm at 9. I'm afraid of Fiery Temper so I throw the Maniac in front of it to soak up some damage. Unfortunately the replay crashes again! I end up losing though and will have to play for 2 packs.

My Match 3 opponent is running BR and explodes on the first turns with Graft Rats, Brazen Wolves, Olivia's Dragoon and Falkenrath Reaver to my Wailing Ghoul Harvest Hand and Enlightened Maniac. Luckily the Ghoul held back his team and I was able to catch up on the board without taking any damage. Insatiable Gorgers comes out with Madness and the Dragoon flies over for 2. I trade my horror for the Gorgers on the next turn and play Gone Missing on the Wolves. Boon takes out my Foulbloods and the replays the Wolves. I Drag Under the Wolves the next turn and get the Foulbloods back with my Scavengers. Markov Crusaders bumps his life total up to 18 while I sit at 12 but I deal with it the next turn with Boon. The Wolves show up again and the play a second Boon on it. Now I start going on the offensive with a Fouldbloods that has Menace. His own Scavengers brings back the Wolves and he swings with the team as Chittering Hosts makes my blocks horrible as I lose 4 creatures to preserve life. Murderous Compulsion takes out the Host and we're still tied up at 7. Borrowed Malevolence kills my fresh Cryptbreaker ns lets his Reave beat my Harvest Hand.  The Homunculus transforms and I put the Scythe on the Foulbloods, dropping him to 2. I play a Supplicant and he puts a Cultist's Staff on the Reaver. I chump block and he concedes.

For the final game of the draft my opponent is stuck on 3 Mountains until turn 5 when he sacrifices a Neonate and finds a Swamp and plays a Dragoon. At this point I have a Furtive Homunculus, Fouldbloods and Supplicant. I Boon the Dragoon and smash for 7 leaving him at 6. He plays a Gorgers and when I topdeck a Drag Under He scoops them up.

This was a fun deck to run as the tempo and card advantage really helps out the late game. It's hard to come back from a Spreading Flames that takes out 3 creatures on your side. That's no excuse though and hopefully I'll continue to get better and be able to win even when I get wrecked by a 7 mana sorcery.
